Dry Skin vs Dehydrated Skin

Dry skin and dehydrated skin are frequently mistaken for one another, yet they represent distinct conditions with unique etiologies and manifestations.

Dry skin, a skin type characterized by inadequate production of natural oils (sebum) by the sebaceous glands, often has a genetic predisposition and can be exacerbated by environmental factors such as weather conditions, harsh cleansing agents, or prolonged exposure to hot water. Key features of dry skin include:

  • Sensation of tightness, particularly following cleansing.

  • Presence of flaky or rough patches, notably on the cheeks, elbows, and knees.

  • Common occurrences of itchiness and discomfort.

  • Manifestation of a dull and lackluster complexion.

Management of dry skin aims to restore lost moisture and oils, typically achieved through the use of emollient-rich moisturizers, gentle cleansing agents, and the avoidance of excessively hot water. Conversely, dehydrated skin pertains to a deficiency in water rather than oil and can affect individuals across various skin types, including oily or combination skin.
